The Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has disclosed that no musician was paid to perform at the COVID-19 Virtual Concert which was held yesterday.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s press briefing on the coronavirus pandemic on Tuesday, she said the artistes performed at the launch of the COVID-19 Tracker for free.

“The launch was held yesterday and I must thank the musicians who also performed for free to lift up the spirit of those of us in lockdown and educate the public through music as well,” she said.

Responding to critics of the concert she said it gave the musicians the platform to showcase their talents and entertain people.

“People are questioning why we had a virtual concert to launch this app. But I think that the musicians also saw it as an opportunity to give something back. These are the skills that they have,’ the Minister explained.

And the feedback indicates that quite a number of people appreciated the performances and through that, they also learnt a bit,” she further stated.

The virtual concert put together by the Ministry of Communications was a side attraction to the launch of a new App that will help in contact tracing people who have come into contact with COVID-19 positive individuals.

Artistes who performed at the launch were Shatta Wale, Fancy Gadam, Kuami Eugene, Diana Asamoah Great Ampong, Dada KD and Kaakyire Kwame Appiah.

Others were Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Eduwodzi and Bukom Banku.

The user friendly and free to download mobile software application will be available for Android and iOS devices after its launch.

This is originally intended for productivity assistance which will supplement the state’s efforts in the fight against the pandemic.
