Don’t be surprised with Kuami Eugene’s recent display of rap dexterity.
First, it was in ‘Wish Me Well where he dropped some dope rap lines; then recently he dished out a sterling rap performance on the ‘Otan Hunu’ remix.
Some have even asserted that if he should take rap seriously, he could pose a great threat to the rap heavyweights.
Kuami actually told NY DJ in an interview on Y102.5FM in Kumasi that he used to rap and sing during his secondary school days.
However, later he decided to pay attention to singing because he could express himself better through that.
“I used to rap way back in Senior High School. I became a rapper because enough attention wasn’t given to singing. It was more of rappers like Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, Dadie Opanka, D Cryme etc dominating and that’s why I channelled my energies into rapping but I grew up to realize I had to take my singing serious. I think I express myself more as a singer,” he said.
Could he really have posed a challenge to the rappers if he stuck to rap than singing?
“By the Grace of God, I’ve got the gift. Anything I tackle, if it’s music-related, I can do it. If it’s dancehall, I can get myself to do it because it’s music-related. That’s where the gift is,” he responded.
He won Artiste of the Year at the 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
