Musicologist, Dr. Alfred Patrick Addaquay, has re-ignited an issue Shatta Wale raised in his State of the Industry Address a few months ago.
Shatta in his address mentioned how confused he was while when in the US, he was asked the kind of music Ghanaians do.
He was lambasted for even raising the issue because people thought it was so evident that highlife is the only genre that is originally Ghanaian.
But Dr. Adaqquay has a different opinion. He thinks it is the very indigenous Ghanaian music forms like Boborbor, adowa, Kate, kpalongo, and the rest that define Ghanaians.
“When you go anywhere international and they ask you what kind of music Ghanaians make, they are talking about what kind of music Ghanaians are identified with. I will never stop saying that when I am talking about Ghanaian music, I am referring to our traditional music,” he said, citing ‘Borborbor, Kpalongo, adowa as examples.

Since he made the statement on Citi TV’s ‘Upside Down’ show, some have reacted by saying the music forms he mentioned do not represent the entire country; that they are music forms for particular groups of people in Ghana.
There are others who also think his assertion makes sense because highlife in itself has so many foreign influences.
