Rapper Medikal has laid claim to Ghanaian drill music and he is already requesting for royalties from his fellow musicians.

The rapper’s claim, via a tweet comes on the back of a recent rise in popularity of the trending genre in Ghana.

According to MDK, he deserves a cut out of the revenue of musicians profiting from drill.

Drill music is a subgenre of hip-hop that originated in Chicago, USA in the early 2010s.

Members and affiliates of Kumasi-based hip-hop group, Asaaka Boys, are noted for championing the genre in Ghana.

In 2021, high-school student, Thorsten Owusu Gyimah, aka Yaw Tog, a drill artist, won the Vodafone Ghana Music (VGMA), Hip-hop Song of the Year, with his viral single, ‘Sore’.
