At the height of the debate regarding the propriety or otherwise of the controversial E-levy Bill, the Majority Leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has caught the attention of the public with his birthday cake.
The birthday cake, is designed in “E-Levy” letters.
Some have opined that his gesture reeks of the government’s resolve to pass the E-Levy Bill into law in spite of public agitations against it.

Despite widespread criticism of the E-levy, proposed to Parliament by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, during the presentation of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, the government argues that the tax will be an efficient means to raise the country’s tax-to-GDP ratio from 13 percent to a target of 16 percent or higher.
“Electronic Transaction Levy” or “E-Levy” will be 1.75 percent on electronic transactions above GHs 100 (US$16) per day.
The levy will be applied to mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments, and inward remittances.
