Ghanaian Reggae/Dancehall artiste Epixode has defended the current crop of musicians against critics who say they do not write songs on a variety of issues.
“I think it’s not fair for some veteran musicians to say that current musicians don’t write songs on a variety of issues,” Epixode said.
“Every era comes with something else, and during their era, there were those who did conscious music and those who just followed the crowd. Same way another era came when we had the likes of Sony Achiba, who I don’t think did better songs than what we do currently in this modern Ghana.”He emphasised in an interview on Cape Coast-based Property FM.
Epixode, known in real life as Theophilus Nii Arday Otoo went on to say that he believes that the young musicians are continuing the work of the veterans, and that they deserve credit for their contributions to the Ghanaian music industry.
“I feel that sometimes we also have to give the young ones the credit because we’re continuing from where the veterans left off,” he said.
“The likes of Kofi Kinaata is a very good songwriter, and I have been nominated for songwriter of the year before, so I think we’re doing well.”
The ‘Atia’ crooner’s comments come at a time when there is a growing debate about the state of Ghanaian music. Some critics have argued that the current crop of musicians is not as talented as previous generations, and that they are not writing songs that are relevant to the lives of Ghanaians.
Epixode’s comments suggest that he disagrees with this assessment, and that he believes that the young musicians are making a valuable contribution to the Ghanaian music industry.
