Ghana’s hopes of winning an award at the 2023 BET Awards were dashed on Sunday, June 25, when Ghanaian singer Camidoh lost out to Cameroonian singer Libianca in the Viewers’ Choice Best International New Act category.
Camidoh, who is known for his hit song “Sugarcane,” was nominated alongside Asake, FLO, Libianca, Maureen, MC Ryan SP, Paris Cooper, Raye, and Werenoi. Libianca’s win was a sign of the growing international appeal of African music.
“I am so happy to win this award,” Libianca said in her acceptance speech. “This is a dream come true for me.” She thanked her fans and her team for their support.
Despite the loss, Camidoh’s nomination was a testament to his growing influence and recognition on an international scale. Ghana also had a strong representation at the awards ceremony, as Burna Boy won the BET Best International Act award for the fourth time in a row.
The BET Awards are an annual awards show that celebrates the best in black music, entertainment, and culture. The show was hosted by Taraji P. Henson and was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Camidoh’s loss to Libianca is a sign of the growing competition in the African music scene. Both artists are talented and have a strong following, but Libianca’s win suggests that she may have a wider appeal to international audiences.
