Today’s audience ‘too dumb’ for stand-up comedy – Damon Wayans

Comedy veteran Damon Wayans has made his opinion on stand-up comedy clear—he won’t be returning to the stage anytime soon.

In a recent interview on Big Boy TV for Big Boy Neighborhood, the legendary comedian shared his frustration with modern audiences, saying they’ve become “too dumb” to appreciate comedy in its raw form.

According to Wayans, people today are “being programmed to be offended,” making it difficult for comedians to perform without backlash.

“As soon as you say the word ‘hate,’ everybody gets loose, their hairs bristle up, and they’re ready to boo,” Wayans remarked, emphasising how audiences have become overly sensitive and quick to react negatively to controversial jokes.

Beyond audience sensitivity, Wayans also criticized the lack of originality in today’s comedy scene.

He pointed out that many stand-up comedians sound alike and recycle the same jokes, making it difficult for fresh perspectives to shine.

He contrasted this with past generations, highlighting Marlon Wayans, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans, John Witherspoon, and Paul Mooney as examples of comedians who each had distinct voices and styles.

Has Cancel Culture Made Stand-Up Too Risky?

Wayans’ comments reflect a growing frustration among comedians—many feel cancel culture has made stand-up an increasingly high-risk profession.

In today’s social climate, jokes about weight, gender, race, and other sensitive topics often face instant backlash from online communities. Social media has amplified this, allowing organised groups to publicly call out comedians, leading to viral outrage, online harassment, and even loss of brand endorsements.

For a comedian like Wayans, who has spent decades pushing boundaries, today’s audience reception may feel stifling. Stand-up was once a space for unfiltered expression, but now, many comedians fear that one misinterpreted joke could derail their careers.

For now, the In Living Color star seems content staying off the stage.
