Ken Agyapong declares NPP flagbearer bid after withdrawing from party tour

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has announced his intention to contest in the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race after pulling out of the party’s national “Thank You” tour over security concerns.

Agyapong’s withdrawal came in the wake of a violent confrontation during an NPP event in Bantama, Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed. The victim, a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group hired to perform at the event, is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

According to Agyapong’s team, the incident unfolded after a wealthy associate of the former MP gave money to the student performers. Armed men—allegedly linked to factions within the NPP—reportedly seized the money, sparking a brawl during which gunshots were fired and the stabbing occurred.

In response, Agyapong condemned the violence and announced his withdrawal from the tour, stating that he could not guarantee the safety of his supporters. “Lives are threatened. I don’t think I can protect my team enough,” he said. “We want out so that Dr. Bawumia can do his campaign.”

Despite stepping back from the tour, Agyapong used the opportunity to reaffirm his political ambitions, declaring his candidacy for the party’s flagbearership. “I am going to contest,” he told reporters. “They should be ready. Nobody can stop me from contesting because we have contributed to the party right from the start.”
