The Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP) has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his renewed commitment to supporting retired legends in Ghana’s creative arts industry.
This follows Mahama’s call for a national celebration in honour of Palmwine Music legend Agya Koo Nimo when he launched the Black Star Experience in Accra on Thursday May 1.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Friday May 2, FOCAP President Kojo Preko Dankwa described Mahama’s pledge as a “fantastic and positive” initiative that reflects his long-standing dedication to the welfare of veteran creatives.
“This is not the first time President Mahama has made such a promise. He has shown, time and again, that he truly cares about the sector. From Agya Koo Nimo to Super OD and KK Kabobo, many legends have benefitted from his support,” Dankwa noted.
He referenced Mahama’s Black Star Experience manifesto, where the President personally commits to prioritising the needs of aging showbiz personalities.
“Mentioning names like Agya Koo Nimo shows how deeply he values the contributions of our pioneers. It’s not just talk — he’s taken action before,” he said.
Dankwa, however, emphasised the need for industry bodies such as MUSIGA and film associations to take a more active role in providing structured welfare and pension schemes for their members.
“We should applaud the President, but we must also ask the associations to rise to the occasion. The burden shouldn’t fall on him alone.
“The industry must position itself to ensure sustainability and dignity for our legends,” he stressed.
