Ahead of the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards scheduled for May 10, industry players have discussed the role of public relations (PR) in managing and promoting artists, especially during award seasons.
During an episode of The Chat with Ekow Koomson on Channel One TV on May 3, attention turned to the ongoing debate among PR representatives of top contenders for Artiste of the Year — King Paluta, Stonebwoy, and King Promise. The discussion became heated, as some PR representatives were seen promoting their artists by speaking negatively about their competitors.
George Britton, CEO of Revolve Music, emphasised the importance of positive promotion.
“It is not about putting one down but about projecting what one’s artiste has done,” he said.
Britton criticised PR approaches that involve tearing down other artists, saying it’s unprofessional and unnecessary.
However, music executive Ricky Tenneson disagreed. He argued that awards are competitive by nature and such strategies are often part of the game.
“This is a competition, and these things are bound to happen,” he said, pointing to how global stars like Kanye West have used bold tactics to make headlines.
Adding another perspective, entertainment journalist Edem Mensah-Tsortsorme stressed that PR should be a continuous process, not limited to award seasons.
“PR is a management process,” he explained, encouraging artists to work closely with their PR teams throughout their careers to build a consistent and meaningful public image.
