A question paper from the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has sparked widespread discussion online for featuring Ghanaian musician King Paluta.
The question, part of the Creative Arts and Design subject, asks candidates to identify key aspects of King Paluta’s music, including his real name, musical style, popular songs, and the social issues his work addresses—marking a notable inclusion of contemporary Ghanaian music in the national curriculum.
The question highlights King Paluta, whose real name is Thomas Adjei Wireko, as a Ghanaian musician known for blending traditional rhythms, storytelling, and modern hip-hop beats.
Candidates were tasked with naming one of his most popular songs, “Aseda,” and identifying two societal issues it addresses, such as pressure, depression, or societal judgment—reflecting the song’s deep cultural resonance.
The exam question, which carries 4 marks, is part of a broader section that also requires students to classify musicians like James V. Armah and K.K. Kabobo under categories such as art or popular music, and to define musical terms including “Pesto” and “A cappella.”
