‘I don’t like politics’ – Richie Mensah on withdrawing from MUSIGA presidential race

Renowned Ghanaian music executive and CEO of Lynx Group Limited, Richie Mensah, has opened up about why he withdrew from the race for the presidency of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), citing his disinterest in politics and positions of authority.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie on June 29, Richie explained that while many in the industry encouraged him to contest for the role, he ultimately realised it didn’t align with his personality or leadership style.

“The truth is, let me be very honest. I don’t like politics. I don’t like power, position, I don’t even like authority,” he said. “Sometimes when people are listening to me I’m amazed. I’m like, why are you even listening to me? I’m passionate about what I do, and I do what I do.”

Richie noted that during the campaign process, it became clear to him that the demands of formal office were not suited to who he is.

“Along the journey, when I had to campaign and talk, I realised this is not me. I want to work. I don’t want to hold office. It’s not my thing,” he admitted.

When asked why he initially considered the position, Richie revealed that it was industry stakeholders who encouraged him, believing that his influence and experience could bring meaningful change to the union.

“A lot of people in the industry kept telling me, ‘We need people like you in these positions to help the industry.’ So I agreed to run because I wanted to contribute. But I later realized I could do more for the industry in my current role than by holding an office.”

Despite stepping away from union politics, Richie continues to play a significant role in Ghana’s music scene. As the head of Lynx Entertainment, now Lynx Group Limited, he has been instrumental in shaping the careers of top Ghanaian acts including Eazzy, Asem, OJ Blaq, Ziggy, MzVee, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, and DopeNation.
