Confusion at UPSA as students denied entry over sudden dress code crackdown

Students at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), were barred from entering lecture halls on Wednesday due to the strict enforcement of the institution’s dress code, sparking confusion and frustration among the student body.

According to an anonymous student, the enforcement appeared inconsistent and targeted, particularly toward Level 100 students.

The student revealed in an interview with Ghana Weekend that the dress code—typically enforced on Mondays when students are required to wear formal attire—was unexpectedly applied on Wednesday, July 2.

“We always wear official [attire] on Mondays. The media knows official is Monday. So, today is Wednesday, and they are still insisting we should wear official,” the student said.

This sudden shift led to half of the students, including those scheduled to take tests, being denied entry to classes starting at 7 a.m.

The situation escalated when a female public relations student was reportedly dragged by an unidentified individual, believed to be a staff member, for an unclear offence.

“We all didn’t know what she did,” the student recounted. “The man approached her, asked which class she was in, and later came back dragging her.”

The incident left students bewildered, as no clear explanation was provided.

Further complicating matters, the student noted inconsistencies in how the dress code was enforced.

“Many people were wearing official dresses, but they were bounced back,” they said, questioning the definition of “official” attire.

Unlike previous years, where dress code inspections were less stringent for Levels 200, 300, and 400, the focus this time seemed to disproportionately target Level 100 students—raising concerns about fairness and possible bias.

The enforcement led to pushing and altercations as teachers intervened, exacerbating tensions. Students expressed frustration over missing classes and tests due to what they perceived as arbitrary rules.

“To be honest, what I saw was what suits them,” the student added, highlighting the lack of clarity and consistency.

UPSA has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or clarify the application of the dress code policy.
