The lawyer for evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, also known as Nana Agradaa, says they will appeal her 15-year prison sentence.
Agradaa was sentenced by the Circuit Court in Accra for defrauding people by false pretences. She was also fined GH¢300 for promoting a money-doubling scheme. If she doesn’t pay the fine, she will serve an extra 30 days in jail.
Her lawyer, Richard Asare Baffour, called the ruling unfair and said they would take the case to a higher court.
“The good thing is that this judgment is delivered by the Circuit Court. So the appellate court—we will file the necessary processes early Monday morning. We are going to do that early Monday morning,” Baffour said on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday July 3.
He also said the court’s decision was disappointing.
“We were not expecting this at all but in summary, the judgment delivered by the court today is nothing but a travesty of justice,” he said. “We say so not because the decision did not go our way. We say so because we are deeply concerned about the reasoning of the court.”
Baffour had earlier asked the court to be lenient, noting that Agradaa is a mother of five and showed remorse. But the court agreed with the prosecution, which pushed for a tough sentence to discourage similar crimes.
Agradaa was arrested in October 2022 after promoting a money-doubling scheme at a church event. Her legal team hopes the appeal will reduce or overturn the sentence.
