The body of 18-year-old Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, who died under unclear circumstances in Latvia, has been brought back to Ghana for burial.
Nana Agyei was studying Electrical Engineering at Riga Technical University, having just enrolled in July 2024. Sadly, he died on June 4, 2025. Latvian police initially said he fell from the sixth floor of his apartment in Riga.
However, his family doesn’t believe this version of events. They say Nana Agyei sent a voice note three days before his death, claiming he had been poisoned.
“We received news that he fell from the sixth floor and died. But we said, no, that cannot be true. There’s no way he would commit suicide,” said Sarah Nimli, a family spokesperson. “I wrote letters to the Foreign Ministry, to the school, and contacted the police. But we realised the police were not responding and appeared to be covering up because the people involved were Latvian nationals.”
In search of answers, a family member went to Latvia and later got support from a representative at the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin, which handles Latvian affairs.
Although Latvian police say they are investigating, the family says they have not received any clear updates from either Latvian authorities or Ghana’s diplomats.
