Nigerian filmmaker Nosa Rex slams Ghanaian TV stations over movie piracy

The debate over piracy in Ghana’s entertainment industry has resurfaced, with Nigerian and Ghanaian filmmakers voicing renewed frustration over the unauthorized use of their works.

Nigerian actor and producer Nosa Rex is the latest to join the chorus of complaints, accusing some Ghanaian television stations of broadcasting his new movie, Prince of Peace, just hours after its release without his consent.

In a video shared online and sighted by Ghana Weekend, the visibly furious filmmaker slammed the stations involved, singling out Unity TV, and described their actions as “stupid.”

He lamented the financial and creative toll piracy takes on filmmakers, adding that authorities in Ghana appear to be doing little to curb the practice.

“I always say this, the Ghanaian entertainment industry will continue to be behind because of this uncalled-for behaviour,” Rex said, condemning the act of showing his work for free without authoristion.

He also criticised Ghanaian colleagues for staying silent when Nigerian filmmakers raise piracy concerns.

Rex’s outburst mirrors similar complaints in recent years from Nigerian stars like Mercy Johnson, Ruth Kadiri, and Omoni Oboli, as well as Ghanaian filmmakers such as Juliet Ibrahim and Xandy Kamel, who have all called for stronger enforcement of copyright laws.

The latest incident has reignited demands for authorities to take swift action, with many in the industry stressing the need for not only legal enforcement but also a culture that respects intellectual property and ensures creators are fairly compensated.
