Promote local films among SHS students to ‘catch them young’ – Amoakohene urges stakeholders

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has called on stakeholders in Ghana’s film industry to intensify efforts to promote local content among Senior High School (SHS) students, stressing the need to “catch them young.”

Speaking at the National Film Dialogue organised by the National Film Authority (NFA) in Accra on Tuesday September 16, he expressed concern that young people were gradually losing interest in indigenous films and creative works.

“Most of the young ones, especially at the SHS level going down, they are losing touch with our local contents. So the forum is true,” he said.

He suggested that offering students free access to Ghanaian films could help foster early interest and loyalty.

“Instead of letting them be at that level, we can offer it for them for free, so that they would be addicted to the local content. Once they get to the university level, where they are able to at least be able to afford the 20s and the 50s, we can change them over again because they are already addicted to our local content,” he explained.

The Minister emphasised the importance of early intervention in building sustainable audiences for Ghanaian productions.

“We should look at the SHS level well and see how best we will be able to catch them young,” he added.

The National Film Dialogue brought together actors, actresses, movie producers, content creators, and other industry players to discuss strategies for reviving and strengthening Ghana’s film industry.
