Amoakohene’s performance in Ashanti Region ‘scary’ – Tema West NPP Chairman

The Tema West New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Kwesi Poku Bosompem has described President John Dramani Mahama’s recent political appointments as “scary,” citing the performance of the appointed Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Amoakohene, as a major concern for his party.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM sighted by  Ghana Weekend on Sunday, October 5, Bosompem said the president’s choice of young, dynamic leaders particularly in regions traditionally dominated by the NPP is unsettling for the party’s political stronghold.

“Mahama’s kind of appointment is scary,” he emphasised. “You get a minister who’s just 35 years old and he’s performing exceptionally well in the Ashanti Region—our stronghold. That’s never happened before.”

According to Bosompem, Dr. Amoakohene’s impressive performance is winning over many young voters in the Ashanti Region, an area that has historically given the NPP over 60% of its total votes. He expressed worry that this could significantly weaken the party’s electoral dominance.

“When people are doing very well in your strong areas, it’s dangerous,” he warned. “Strategically, Mahama bringing someone who’s neutralizing everything the NPP has been doing in the Ashanti Region is scary.”

He compared the youthful energy and discipline of Dr. Amoakohene to the conduct of the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, whom he accused of “misbehaving.”

“We have a regional chairman who is older and misbehaving, and a young minister who is performing—tell me, isn’t that scary?” Bosompem quizzed.

Despite acknowledging the threat, Bosompem commended Dr. Amoakohene for breaking age stereotypes in politics and urged that young people be given more opportunities to lead.

“I wish that young man succeeds,” he added. “So that one day, we can move away from the belief that you must be a certain age to hold a high office.”

The Tema West NPP chairman’s comments have since sparked debate within political circles, with some praising his honesty while others view it as an admission of weakness within the party’s leadership in the Ashanti Region.
