Wendy Shay: I was bullied online for joining RuffTown after Ebony’s death

Ghanaian musician Wendy Shay has reflected on one of the most difficult periods of her career — the time when she faced intense public backlash for being seen as the “replacement” of the late singer Ebony Reigns.

In an interview with Headless YouTuber on Monday October 20, Wendy revealed that she was heavily criticised and bullied online after signing with RuffTown Records, the same label that managed Ebony before her untimely passing in 2018.

When asked if she ever felt like giving up because of the hate and comparisons, Wendy Shay admitted that the thought of quitting crossed her mind, but she remained determined to fulfill her purpose.

“I’ve always been that person who goes to the end of it. I want to see the outcome. I knew I was here for a reason. It was tough, but I knew going back wasn’t part of the plan,” she said.

She recounted how her family, particularly her mother, was deeply concerned about the constant negativity she faced online.

“Even though my mom told me I should come back because it was serious. It was like scandal after scandal every week. Someone would take my picture, edit it, and then they’d just bully me and mock me and harass me on Twitter,” Wendy recounted.

The singer noted that the attacks didn’t only affect her but also had an emotional toll on her family.

“As a mother or a family member, when you see someone you’re close to go through that, it doesn’t just affect them but how people see them as well,” she added.

Despite the challenges, Wendy Shay has grown to become one of Ghana’s most resilient and successful female artistes, using her story as an example of perseverance and self-belief in the face of adversity.
