Love took flight in Paris: The daring helicopter prison break that shocked the world

In the spring of 1986, Paris witnessed one of the most extraordinary acts of devotion — and audacity — in criminal history, an escape so cinematic it could rival any Hollywood blockbuster.

Business Upturn

Nadine Vaujour, a woman driven by love and sheer determination, didn’t just dream of rescuing her husband from behind the high walls of La Santé Prison — she learned to fly. Secretly enrolling in helicopter lessons under a pseudonym, Nadine spent months mastering the controls so she could execute one of the most daring jailbreaks ever seen.

On the morning of May 26, 1986, clad in flight gear, she rented a small Alouette 2 helicopter from a flight school just outside Paris. In the skies over the French capital, she piloted the chopper with precision toward her target: the grim, forbidding prison where her husband Michel Vaujour, a convicted bank robber serving an 18-year sentence, was counting the days behind bars.

As the rotors whirred above the prison’s roof, guards looked up in disbelief. Michel — waiting in a carefully rehearsed spot — seized the moment. In just minutes, he climbed aboard, and the helicopter lifted, spiriting him away from the fortress below. Another inmate hesitated and stayed behind, but for the Vaujours, freedom seemed within reach.

They landed on a quiet athletic field in southern Paris, where a getaway car waited. For a fleeting moment, the couple disappeared into the Parisian maze, leaving the stunned authorities scrambling.

The story didn’t end like a fairy tale. After a nationwide manhunt, Michel and Nadine were recaptured months later when they resurfaced during another crime spree. Both were returned to prison — but not before their dramatic escape etched itself into history as one of the boldest — and most romantic — prison breaks ever attempted.

Their astonishing real-life adventure was later immortalised in French culture, inspiring the 1992 film La Fille de l’air (The Girl of the Air), a tribute to a woman whose passion quite literally took flight.

For readers who love true stories of passion, danger, and the lengths some will go for love — this one is unforgettable.
