Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi known globally as Tems has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African female artiste to secure seven entries on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Her latest single “What You Need,” debuted at number 93 on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 bringing her total appearances on the prestigious chart to seven.
With this accomplishment, Tems now equals Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and South African rock band Seether as the African acts with the highest number of Billboard Hot 100 entries, each with seven songs on the chart.
Tems previously made history in 2022 when she became the first African artiste to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. She achieved the feat through her collaboration with Future and Drake on the chart-topping single “Wait For U.”
Industry projections suggest she could soon surpass the current record. J. Cole’s forthcoming track “Bunce Road Blues,” which features Tems and Future, is anticipated to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week, potentially giving her a record-breaking eighth entry.
