Rising Ghanaian artiste Yb Vybez has shared his thoughts on why he chose to pursue highlife music, stating that the genre requires depth and a forward-thinking mindset.
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM with Kwame Dadzie on Wednesday, March 4, the budding musician explained that highlife stands out because of its meaningful messages and ability to connect with people on a deeper level.
When asked what inspired his decision to focus on highlife while many of his contemporaries are experimenting with other genres, Yb Vybez said he believes highlife carries powerful messages that resonate with people who think beyond the present.
“With highlife, you have a great message out there. With highlife, you’re able to connect with those with that big mindset to think ahead of life,” he said.
The artiste further stressed that highlife is not for everyone, describing it as a genre that demands critical thinking and maturity.
“Highlife is not for lower mind thinkers. It’s not for lower mind thinkers. You need to think deep,” he stated.
According to him, the depth and lyrical substance embedded in highlife music may explain why some young listeners are not embracing the genre as much as others in recent times.
Highlife, a genre deeply rooted in Ghana’s musical heritage, is known for its storytelling, rich instrumentation, and socially conscious themes. Yb Vybez’s comments add to ongoing conversations about the evolution of Ghanaian music and the place of highlife in today’s industry.
