Comedian Lekzythecomic has opened up about the boundaries he sets for himself in comedy, disclosing that he deliberately avoids making jokes about rape due to the sensitivity of the subject.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on Thursday, March 26, the comedian said while humour is often subjective, some topics require caution.
“When it comes to comedy, it is to the comedian’s discretion,” he explained. “Personally, I don’t do jokes about rape. I feel it is too sensitive a topic to make jokes out of.”
Lekzythecomic, however, acknowledged that comedy styles vary and that some comedians have tackled controversial issues, including rape, in ways that have resonated with certain audiences.
According to him, the effectiveness of such jokes often depends on delivery and the comedian’s skill.
“It depends on who is executing the joke,” he noted, adding that in some instances, even victims have found humour in such performances, though he maintains his personal stance against it.
The comedian also highlighted the importance of reading audience reactions during performances, stressing that comedians often test boundaries in real time.
“You will not know the line until you cross it,” he said. “Sometimes when a comedian starts a topic and realises the audience is giving cold energy, there’s no need to push further. You just switch.”
He explained that comedians typically “test the waters” with certain topics, such as sex jokes, to gauge whether the audience is receptive before diving deeper.
“If the first line doesn’t work, then you need to withdraw. You don’t have to push further because you are creating your own pit and burying yourself,” he said.
Lekzythecomic added that a lack of laughter, even for a short time, can feel painfully long on stage, describing it as one of the most uncomfortable experiences for any performer.
“A comedian on stage for like two minutes and not getting people laughing, it feels like a thousand years,” he remarked.
His comments contribute to ongoing conversations about the limits of comedy and the responsibility comedians bear when addressing sensitive topics.
