Rap icon Okyeame Kwame has made bold reflections on his legacy and influence in the Ghanaian music industry, declaring his place in the evolution of Ghanaian rap while honouring one of the genre’s pioneers.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 7, Okyeame Kwame drew a clear distinction between his role and that of Reggie Rockstone, widely regarded as the originator of hiplife.
“The godfather of rap music is Reggie Rockstone. I am the father,” he stated with a smile as a central figure in nurturing and expanding the genre beyond its foundational stage.
During the conversation, Okyeame Kwame also disclosed his influence on the early career of Lord Kenya, noting that he played a pivotal role in introducing him to pop music long before his eventual departure from secular music.
“I introduced Lord Kenya to pop music,” he said, adding that their connection was way back. According to him, the two were colleagues who frequently engaged in rap battles, sharpening each other’s craft in their formative years.
He further disclosed that it was through his network that Lord Kenya met Mark Okraku-Mantey, a key industry figure who contributed to shaping their early sound after working with them as a producer.
Okyeame Kwame’s remarks offer a rare glimpse into the roots of Ghana’s rap scene, highlighting the relationships, rivalries, and collaborations that helped define an era.
As he celebrates five decades in music, his reflections reinforce his enduring influence and the role he continues to play in preserving and promoting Ghanaian musical heritage.
