Ghana’s first female boxing champion, Abigail Kwartekaa, has disclosed that she received no form of support or reward from the Ghana Boxing Association after winning her title.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Kwartekaa expressed disappointment over what she described as neglect following her historic achievement.
When asked what she received aside from the title belt after her victory, she responded bluntly: “They don’t give you anything… Nothing, yes.”
Pressed further on whether there was any form of cash prize or additional reward, she maintained that there was none.
According to her, despite being affiliated with the Ghana Boxing Association, she has not benefited from any meaningful support.
“Yes, but the Ghana Boxing Authority doesn’t do anything for me,” she said.
Kwartemaa also raised concerns about possible disparities in how male and female boxers are treated, suggesting that her male counterparts may receive better recognition or incentives.
“I was very sad because if the men go through, they do something special for them. But I mean, they never do anything for the women,” she stated.
She added that the lack of communication from the association has left her uncertain about her next steps.
“They never call me, so I don’t know what I’m doing now,” she lamented.
Her remarks have sparked conversations around athlete welfare and the level of institutional support available to female boxers in Ghana.
