Okyeame Kwame has made a bold revelation about the origins of Ghana’s most prestigious music awards scheme.
Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, April 17, the veteran musician disclosed that the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards were instituted partly due to the intense rivalry between his former group Akyeame and fellow hiplife star Lord Kenya.
“The Ghana Music Awards ceremony was instituted because of the rivalry between Akyeame and Lord Kenya,” he stated, pointing to the competitive energy that defined the early days of Ghana’s hiplife movement.
According to Okyeame Kwame, the fierce musical battles between the two camps captured national attention and underscored the need for a formal system to recognise and celebrate artistic excellence.
The rivalry he suggested helped shape conversations around credibility, influence and dominance in the industry, ultimately contributing to the establishment of an awards platform to properly acknowledge talent.
The Telecel Ghana Music Awards have since grown into Ghana’s biggest music awards event, celebrating outstanding achievements across multiple genres while spotlighting the evolution of the industry.
Okyeame Kwame’s remarks offer a fresh historical perspective on the roots of the scheme, highlighting how competition and artistry in the early 2000s played a pivotal role in structuring Ghana’s modern music landscape.
