Musician Okyeame Kwame has disclosed that he declined an offer to become the running mate of Alan Kyerematen of the Movement for Change in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on Tuesday, April 21, the rapper described the moment as both surprising and deeply humbling.
According to him, the proposal left a lasting impression, as he never imagined being considered for such a high political role.
“I haven’t been this grateful as much as I was to Alan Kyeremanten when he asked me to be his running mate, though I declined,” he said.
Okyeame Kwame disclosed that the team behind the Movement for Change outlined a set of strict criteria for selecting a running mate.
These included possessing at least a master’s degree, being well-educated, being married with children, having no criminal record, and maintaining a strong social media presence—specifically over one million followers.
After reviewing the requirements, he admitted that he felt uniquely qualified among potential candidates.
“When I checked all these, I believed I was the only person who qualified,” he noted.
Despite meeting the criteria, the musician said he ultimately chose to turn down the offer after careful reflection and consultation with his family and close associates.
He explained that his personal mission to promote Ghana through his craft played a key role in his decision, as he did not want to venture into active politics.
“I thought about it, spoke to my family and even some leaders, but at the end, I had to decline because my aim is to promote Ghana and not do anything political,” he added.
Okyeame Kwame further emphasised that his decision was also influenced by his mental preparedness, admitting he did not feel ready to take on such a demanding political responsibility.
Nevertheless, he expressed profound appreciation for the recognition, describing the offer as an honour he does not take lightly.
“I was so, so happy to be honoured by such an entity like Alan Kyeremanten. I had to call him to decline because I wasn’t mentally ready for that,” he concluded.
