Amandzeba on why he distanced himself from creative arts associations

Amandzeba Nat Brew has disclosed that, about a decade ago, he made a conscious decision to stay away from creative arts associations, societies, and agencies due to what he describes as a lack of visionary thinking within such groups.

Speaking on The Upside Down Show on Channel One TV with host Frema Adunyame on Sunday, May 31, the celebrated musician shared his frustrations with how ideas are often handled within industry bodies.

The discussion arose after the host questioned what creative arts institutions had done to preserve and promote Ghana’s cultural heritage, particularly given the existence of agencies established to support the sector.

In response, Amandzeba said he deliberately chose to detach himself from such organisations because meaningful ideas often face resistance from people who do not share the same vision.

“I decided about 10 years ago never to be interested in all these associations, societies and agencies.”

According to him, innovative proposals can take years to materialise because many members of such groups are unwilling to embrace ambitious projects.

He illustrated his point with a hypothetical example, suggesting that if someone proposed building a museum to preserve the country’s creative legacy, the idea would likely be dismissed immediately due to concerns about funding and other challenges.

“If you say we should put up a museum, somebody will say, ‘Do you know how much it will cost? We don’t even have money to pay this and that, and you want us to build a museum,” he explained.

The musician argued that such responses reflect a mindset that is confined by limitations rather than inspired by possibilities.

“That is when a whole society is thinking within the box and not outside the box,” he added.

Amandzeba’s comments highlight ongoing conversations within Ghana’s creative arts sector about leadership, innovation, and the need for long-term investments in cultural preservation and development.
