Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has called on Ghanaians at home and in the diaspora to unite behind the Black Stars as they prepare to begin their World Cup campaign against Panama today [Wednesday, June 17].
In a message shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday, June 16, the former striker appealed to football fans to set aside their differences and support the national team, describing football as the country’s greatest unifying force.
“To Ghana and all Ghanaians in the diaspora: let’s put our differences behind us. Football is the greatest game that unites us. Let’s come together once again and give ultimate support to the Black Stars.”
Gyan noted that the World Cup presents another opportunity for Ghana to showcase its image on the global stage and urged citizens to back the team throughout the tournament.
“We have another opportunity to market the Ghana brand through the World Cup. Let’s do it again.
“The Black Stars are our brand. Our pride. Our only product. Congratulations. The nation believes in you. I believe in you, just like my golden generation believed in the Blazers.”
Gyan further extended appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, the Ghana Football Association led by Kurt Okraku, the media, supporters and all Ghanaians for their collective efforts in helping the team reach the tournament.
According to him, national unity will remain important regardless of the team’s results in the competition.
“Win, lose, or draw, we’ll all be smiling together if we stand as one. Go make us proud, boys. Ghana is behind you.”
