Jamaican musician Gramps Morgan has expressed optimism about the future of reparatory justice after participating in the Next Steps conference on Reparatory Justice in Accra, Ghana.
The conference brought together heads of state, prime ministers and senior government officials from more than 80 countries across Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas to discuss reparations and outline practical steps for addressing the lasting effects of slavery and colonialism.
Reflecting on the event, the Morgan Heritage member said he was honoured to be part of the discussions aimed at advancing the global reparations movement.
“It was an absolute pleasure to be present at this amazing conference so the world can have a conversation about reparations and what the next steps are.”
Morgan also described his visit to Ghana as meaningful, expressing hope that continued dialogue and action would help heal historical wounds experienced by people of African descent.
“This trip to Ghana is a very interesting one. I am looking forward to the healing of wounds that have taken place over so many years,” he added.
The conference was convened by President John Dramani Mahama in his role as the African Union Champion for Reparations.
Discussions focused on moving the reparations agenda beyond acknowledging historical injustices to implementing concrete measures for achieving reparatory justice.
Participants also explored policy options, international cooperation and strategies for sustaining engagement on the issue across regions.
