Nigerian actor Deyemi Okanlawon has criticised the growing culture of ridiculing public figures on social media, urging people to show greater empathy towards celebrities.
Speaking in a recent interview on the CreativiTea podcast, the actor expressed concern over the relentless criticism and mockery many public figures face online, saying most people fail to appreciate the pressures that come with life in the spotlight.
According to Okanlawon, many social media users judge and attack celebrities without understanding the personal and professional challenges they deal with behind the scenes.
“I see people who have no idea what the challenge is that people in the spotlight are facing. They just come up with a lot of things. It’s sad to see,” he said.
The actor stressed that celebrities are human beings who, despite their fame, also face personal struggles and deserve the same compassion and understanding as everyone else.
Okanlawon also criticised the growing use of the term “yeyebrities” to describe celebrities, describing the label as dismissive and unfair.
He added that constantly belittling the success of others often becomes a barrier to achieving one’s own success.
