Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has called for greater global attention to the wave of kidnappings in Nigeria, saying there is “no image to protect” if innocent children continue to disappear.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Africa, the award-winning musician said he felt compelled to use his platform to highlight the country’s worsening security challenges, particularly the reported abduction of students in Oyo State.
“A lot of people don’t really want to talk about what goes on in my country, simply because they want to protect the image,” Davido said. “But there’s no image to protect if little kids are being kidnapped.”
The singer explained that while he was honoured to participate in activities surrounding the FIFA World Cup, he believed it was equally important to draw international attention to the realities many Nigerians face.
“As much as I was happy to do the World Cup, we also have to understand that there are things going on back home in our country, which we have the power to let the world know through our own means.”
Davido added that, as an artiste, music and performances are his most powerful tools for advocating on issues that affect ordinary Nigerians.
His comments come amid growing concerns over the safety of students and residents in parts of Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have remained a major security challenge.
