A 65-year-old visitor, Carl Isom-McDaniel, was seriously injured after being attacked by a wild bull bison near Yellowstone National Park’s Bridge Bay Campground while taking photographs with his 13-year-old grandson.
Witnesses said the animal appeared agitated before charging and tossing him several feet into the air.
He is currently recovering.
The incident has renewed calls for visitors to respect wildlife safety guidelines.
Although bison may appear calm, they are among Yellowstone’s most dangerous animals, capable of weighing over 2,000 pounds and becoming particularly aggressive during the breeding season.
Park authorities decided not to euthanise the bison, explaining that it was displaying natural behaviour in its protected habitat.
Instead, officials continue to emphasise visitor education, urging people to maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from bison and other large wildlife.
The attack serves as a reminder that Yellowstone’s animals are wild and should be observed from a safe distance.
