Joe dominates R&B Nights while 50 Cent and 702 deliver surprise moments

R&B nostalgia took centre stage as Joe and Donell Jones went head-to-head in VERZUZ’s “R&B Nights” on August 20, 2026, delivering an evening filled with timeless hits, surprise guests, and a lopsided outcome that had social media buzzing.

Donell Jones commenced the show with one of his biggest records, setting an early tone of two catalogues that helped define R&B from the late 1990s into the 2000s. But his opening moments were hampered by apparent microphone or sound issues — though neither VERZUZ nor the production team ever officially confirmed a technical fault, so it remains what viewers heard rather than a confirmed glitch.

The R&B veteran opened with a classic “Don’t Wanna Be a Player” and immediately raised the bar, with smooth, controlled vocals that set a clear contrast against Jones’ rockier start. From there, the gap between the two performances quickly became the biggest talking point of the night.

Jones didn’t back down, though. He dug into his catalogue for staples like “U Know What’s Up,” “Where I Wanna Be,” and “This Luv,” giving longtime fans plenty to sing along to. But the sound issues kept resurfacing as a topic whenever he returned to the mic, and social media — particularly X — was unsparing in its reaction to his vocal performance throughout the night.

The night’s biggest jolt of energy came when Joe brought out 50 Cent, along with Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda, for a surprise performance of their 2003 collaboration “Wanna Get to Know You,” followed by “Big Rich Town,” the theme song from the Power television franchise.

Donell Jones matched the moment with a reunion of his own, bringing out 702 to perform “Get It Together,” a song Jones wrote and produced for the group’s 1996 album No Doubt. YG and Tyrese were also on hand for the event, adding to the star power of the night.

These guest turns underscored what Jones had said going in: this wasn’t meant to be a fight. He described the event as a celebration of two catalogues and two careers rather than a battle between competitors looking to one-up each other.

When it came to the numbers, Joe’s night was never really in question. He topped the fan vote with 75% overall and won 14 of the 16 rounds, according to Complex, which sponsored the event’s live voting.

An early poll had Joe ahead by a much narrower 55%-45% margin, but as the night wore on and Jones’ vocal struggles became a recurring theme, the gap widened considerably—with one live tracker showing the margin stretch to 62%-38% by Jones’ third set.

Still, a lopsided scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story. Donell Jones brought the nostalgia, the fan-favourite deep cuts, and one of the smoothest catalogues of his generation. Joe brought vocal consistency, stage command, and a surprise hip-hop reunion that turned into one of the night’s most talked-about moments.

Once again, VERZUZ showed why the platform works best when it brings the right artists — and their history — together. Between the elegant setting, the classic records, the online debates, and the surprise appearances from 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, Uncle Murda, 702, YG, and Tyrese, the Joe vs. Donell Jones showdown gave R&B fans plenty to talk about.

For longtime fans who grew up on these records, the night was a reminder of an era when songwriting, musicianship, and vocal ability ruled the airwaves even when, on this particular night, one artist clearly had the edge.
