Member of Parliament of Cape Coast North Constituency and Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Barbara Ayisi Asher has called on the creative arts industry, stakeholders to use the creative arts to boost Ghanaian culture.
She said this while speaking at the Creative Industry Forum at the National Theatre on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.
She admonished movie producers to properly represent the Ghanaian culture with the local languages.
“Please industry players from now onwards, let us stop thinking that anything Ghanaian is archaic. If I am a teacher teaching English Literature and English Language, why can’t I speak my Fante? My Fante is even nicer than the English or what do you think? she quizzed.
“So please I’ll ask you use your local dialect,” she added.
She also said it was high time the industry gave new faces the opportunity to showcase their talent rather than casting the same faces over and over again.
She used the opportunity to celebrate the Kumawood movie industry and advised that industry persons are celebrated for their hard work and parents should support their wards who choose acting, music, modelling or makeup artistry over being doctors, lawyers, among others.
“I don’t think we know what we have so, whiles we’re reviving the industry, there’s nothing like high class or low class, speaking Fante doesn’t mean you’re a low class so Kumawood, I celebrate you,” he further stated.
According to Barbara, the creative industry is not dead as has been touted by some critics. She said everybody has a role to play in making it work.
The Creative Industry Forum was aimed at bringing together all its stakeholders and the media together to deliberate on how to revive the creative sector.
