Quamina MP has said there has been a great improvement in his life since his song ‘Wiase Ye De’ became a hit.
He recounted that he used to live on 20 cedis for a whole week, eating bread and beverage as brunch and kenkey with fish for supper.
He said he had to perch with a friend when he moved to Accra from Mankessim.
He narrated how he had to sleep in his friend’s parents’ printing press around 12 at night, wake up early and leave before work started for the day.
In an interview with Delay, he disclosed that he failed his core mathematics and had to write remedial exams for a while until he went to Ghana Telecom University for 2 years. Unfortunately, he had to drop out.
He resorted to moving from friend to friend, studio to studio since he was already good with studio work till he met Ground Up group.
He said had to move from the first studio to another because the owner sold it when he went to visit his family and the second studio got burnt where he lost his TV and other possessions to the fire.
He then moved to Ground Up studio, started sleeping there while producing until he did the remix of ‘Wiase Ye De’ with Kwesi Arthur.
When Delay asked him if he has seen changes in his life after his song became a hit and he replied, “At first I used to spend 20gh for like a whole week. First, if I had 20gh I feel like I have money. I can eat, I’ll be fine. After all, I’ll buy bread 1 cedi and cowbell coffee 2 cedi and even that I take it around 11:00. At night, I buy kenkey 1 cedi, fish 2 cedi and it’s been like that for a while.”
“But now, I don’t feel it when I’m hungry. I can even buy a sack of rice, we cook at home and I’m not able to eat. God has been very good to us,” he added.
Touching on his accommodation issue he said “When I came to Accra from Mankessim, I didn’t have a place to lay my head. I had a friend from St Mary’s Boys in Takoradi who got employed as a secretary in a recording studio he asked me to come to Accra. My parents didn’t know where I was going and my friend’s father did not agree to me sleeping in their home because he didn’t know anything about me, my parents or anything.”
“So what happened was they had a printing press in Mataheko so I roam in town throughout the day till 12 in the night he allows me to sleep in the shop and leave at 5 am so it was just like that for some time”
“Now, I have a rented place -2 bedrooms with a hall,” he finally noted.
