Ghanaian highlife musicians Dada KD has responded to reports that suggest that Shatta Wale and Kuami Eugene were paid their usual performance fees at the recently-held COVID-19 Virtual Concert.
He said he called the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu to verify and he was told those stories were false.
“I called the Minister of Communications and she said that is speculative but I am saying that if later I find out it is true, I’ll be hurt,” he said.
The ‘Odo Mu Anigye’ singer also noted that it may even happen Shatta Wale and Kuami Eugene were not paid but someone may have gone for the money through dubious means.
“Probably Shatta Wale said he wouldn’t take anything but someone would capitalize on that, budget for it, and keep that money,” he further noted.
The highlife artiste who also performed at the concert during the launch of the COVID-19 Tracker told ghanaweekend.com in an interview he did not charge for the concert but he was given something small for transportation.
However, he warned that if it later comes out that Shatta Wale and Kuami Eugene were paid their usual fees, he will be very disappointed.
On Monday, April 13, 2020, Dada KD and a number of other Ghanaian artistes performed at the COVID-19 Virtual concert, put together by the Ministry of Communications as a side attraction to the launch of the COVID-19 Tracker.
Even though Dada KD, Kaakyire Kwame Appiah, and Fancy Gadam have come out say they were not paid but were given tokens to sort out their transportation costs, some have also reported the likes of Shatta Wale may have taken real performance fees.
The Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said during the coronavirus press briefing of the Ministry of Information that the artistes performed at the launch of the COVID-19 Tracker for free.
“The launch was held yesterday and I must thank the musicians who also performed for free to lift up the spirit of those of us in lockdown and educate the public through music as well,” she said.
Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has also come out to rubbish claims that he was paid for his performance at the concert.
Other artistes who performed at the launch were Diana Asamoah, Great Ampong, Lucky Mensah, Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Eduwodzi and Bukom Banku.
