Rapper EL has said he is saddened by lists made up to classify rappers and talk about who is the best and the worst.
The ‘Kaalu’ hitmaker born Elom Adablah, is known for the production of music, rap and generally versatility but is barely part of lists compiled of topmost rappers in the country.
Speaking to this in an interview with TV3’s MzGee, he explained that rap is an art and art is expressed differently which means comparing individuals who are expressing art in their various ways is not the way to go.
According to him, there is nothing like the best rapper and that every artiste is unique in their own way and that he is not looking to be in everybody’s list.
“I’m just in a class of my own. I’m not for everybody. I don’t want to be for everybody. I want to be for a select few who are actually enlightened enough and smart and intelligent enough to know what I’m talking about. I don’t want to be mass production. I don’t want to be in everybody’s top five,” he noted.
When he was asked where he places himself as a rapper in the Ghanaian music industry since he does not make it to the top of the lists, he said, “I don’t place myself anywhere, the thing is as I’ve grown and I have come to realise that, when it comes to rap nobody is better than anybody. There is no best rapper. Rap is an art form and the thing about art is you can’t do arts better than anybody else. Art is your personal expression so if you express yourself in a kind of way and 99 per cent of the people don’t like it, then you focus on the 1 per cent who do because that is your expression.
“So, all the competition that goes on and stuff, I’m in a class of my own. I’m not just a rapper.I’m a singer, I’m a producer; I mix, I master, I edit my own videos, I do artwork. I do everything so it’s very hard to put me in a box and when I see those lists, it’s sad to me because people are getting boxed up and I’m just not in that class,” he added.
