Per the calendar, today marks another world press freedom Day like it does fall on May 3 every year.
To mark the significance of the day, Media person, Bridget Otoo has called on the Government to respect and honour its commitment to the freedom of the press.
The message had portions directed to each government, the citizens and the journalists alive and the journalists who are late.
To the citizens, she told to acknowledge Ghanaian journalists as citizens who have the freedom to express their opinion.
Addressing journalists, she advised them to express their views without any sort of fear.
She made mention of the investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ partner who was shot and killed in Madina in January 2019. Up until now, no arrests have been made and the issue remains hanging.
She also mentioned Komla Dumor who died from a cardiac arrest in 2014; to them, she expressed gratitude for all their sacrifices.
“I want to use this day to simply call on the Government of Ghana to respect and honour its commitments to press freedom.
Some Ghanaians also have to understand that Ghanaian journalists are also citizens of Ghana, with the right to an opinion and also have the freedom to express it. Journalists should also have NO FEAR whatsoever in expressing their views on issues.
As someone tweeted “ If I (a Journalist) can’t have an opinion then you don’t have the right to have an opinion on my opinion” she said in her Instagram post.
“To all journalists, those with us and sadly those who are no longer with us eg. Ahmed Suale, Komla Dumor etc.
I am grateful for the sacrifices you’ve all made for me to be able to call myself a journalist, have the motivation to practice my craft and more importantly have the freedom to express my opinion,” she added.
She posted the caption alongside the images of the two late journalists she made mention of, a shot of an article and an image to mark the day.
