Beat producer and talent manager, Kaywa has disclosed that about seventy per cent of artistes he knows depend solely on playing shows for a living.
Although it seems artistes make money from streaming platforms, merchandise, brand ambassadorial deals and then, of course, playing shows, ‘Highly Spiritual’ noted that a large number of artistes rather make their income from the shows.
Speaking to Bernard Avle on Citi TV’s Point of View, Kaywa said because artistes are unable to play shows during these times, it has also affected the recording business.
According to him, since the coronavirus has affected businesses and there is still a ban on public gathering, artistes who come to his studio use the pandemic as an excuse to get songs recorded at a small fee or even for free.
“There are no shows and you have a lot of acts coming in and then say the corona issue so charley, try and bring the price down. The corona issue so charley, try and record the song for me for free. That’s what we’re suffering in the studio,” he disclosed.
When Bernard asked him if artistes only make money from the shows they play, he replied, “I can tell you for a fact that sixty to seventy per cent of the artistes I know derive their revenue from shows to be very honest with you”.
Using two of his artistes as an example, he stated that they have good songs making an impact and fetching them some money on iTunes but the absence of the shows is actually affecting them.
