Rapper Medikal has added his voice to the rising concern of the survival of artistes in the absence of shows.
For some time now Ghanian artistes have been complaining about the system.
According to them, although they look like they are living a good life, most artistes depend on shows to make money because their projects are not well monetised and there are no royalties to depend on in times like this when the world is battling coronavirus pandemic.
In a tweet, rapper Edem noted that every artiste in Ghana is hungry.”
Stonebwoy also in a live Instagram chat with the Information Minister raised the same concerns.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, May 26, rapper Medikal stated that the situation has affected him just like every other artiste except he has other sources of income which is sustaining him for now but his wish is that “this thing disappears”.
He explained, “You know, musicians in Ghana mostly survive through shows. Obviously streaming also pays but not like shows. Our people are now accepting the concept of streaming but not everyone has the Itunes card to stream on Spotify so obviously we’re trying to adjust ourselves little by little. The little we get, we manage but if there were shows to play, we’d take ‘block’ to perform.”
When Andy Dosty asked him if he is also affected, he replied”of course” and touching on how he is surviving, he said, “I have some apartments at one or two sites that I’m renting out and then my wife also supports home with her businesses. I have other things I do which bring in money.
“I’m surviving but with the music; shows and other stuff, the money comes excessively.”
