‘Blema Tesa’ hitmaker, Perez Musik has made a profound statement on the representation of gospel acts in the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year category.
While some have rooted for at least a gospel musician to have an automatic feature in the Artiste of the Year category every year, Perez music believes, that will breed mediocrity.
Speaking to Ghana Weekend TV in an exclusive interview during the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards held in Accra, Perez said artistes should be nominated based on their works and not because they are from any particular genre.
“That will give room for mediocrity. It has to be worked for. It has to be as competitive as it has to be. The world is more like a global village now. When you are doing something in Ghana, you should know that you are not just competing with Ghanaians. You are competing with people around. So if you want to create a slot for gospel, and it is not meeting the standard and a gospel musician becomes Artiste of the Year and is not able to meet global demands, then you are shooting yourself in the foot, he said.
In the past, there had been a lot of conversations about why gospel artistes never won the ultimate award – the Artiste of the Year, until Joe Mettle won it in 2017 and Joe Diana Hamilton in 2021.
When the nominations for the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards were released, some people argued that Joe Mettle, the only gospel nominee, May have earned the nomination because the Board automatically needed a gospel representation.
To proponents of that argument, other secular artistes deserved that slot better than Joe Mettle.
However, the organisers have also explained that all their nominations are purely based on facts and figures, which means all their nominees really deserve their slots.
The Artiste of the Year award for the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards was won by Lynx Entertainment signee, KiDi.
