Gospel musician Cwesi Oteng has refuted claims that he had said he regretted rooting for the New Patriotic Party in the previous elections.
Recently, the ‘God Dey Bless Me’ was reported to have said that with the hard economic conditions in the country, regretted rooting for Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP administration.
“Openly declaring my support for a political party came with some regrets. I thought Free SHS was something to commend, but it ended up being crap in people’s eyes,” Cwesi Oteng said in an interview on Hitz FM.
Speaking on Empire FM with Hertilicious, Cwesi explained that his comment on the matter was misconstrued.
“My regret is that I live in a country where people want you to think like them. Because David is able to do it and Nigeria understands, Wizkid is able to do it, and Nigeria understands. I wished I come from a civilized community where people’s views are not being used as weapons,“ he said.
“All I am saying is that I still believe in Free SHS, but people don’t think that when you endorse something like this, they will clap for you. That’s what I am saying. It is crap in people’s eyes,” he said.
According to him, because people are polarised on party lines, it is difficult for them to admit to positive policies like the free SHS.
“There is no audio that has me saying that I regret endorsing Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo,” he further noted.
Before and during the 2022 general elections, some celebrities and musicians in Ghana publicly declared their support for various political parties.
Cwesi Oteng is among the celebrities that declared his support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Others were Agya Koo, Prince David Osei, Samini, Bibi Bright, Praye, Diana Asamoah, Matilda Asare, Kaakyire Kwame Appiah, among others.
