The #PlayGhana initiative, spearheaded by key institutions such as the Ministry of Information, Ministry of Arts and Tourism, Ghana Folkloric Board, seasoned and emerging music talents, and DJs, advocates for the advancement of Ghanaian music. Mark Okraku Mantey, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, underscores the importance of musicians fostering strong relationships with DJs, emphasizing their pivotal role in propelling artists to stardom by consistently playing their songs.

The minister cautions that a lack of respect or strained relations with DJs could hinder artists’ chances of success in the competitive music industry. Addressing concerns expressed by DJs who often feel undervalued and disrespected after contributing significantly to a musician’s promotion, Mr. Okraku Mantey calls for a shift in this narrative. He advocates for mutual respect, urging both artists and DJs to comprehend and appreciate their respective roles in the music ecosystem.

This appeal was made during a recent stakeholder engagement organized by the Ministry of Information, seeking insights from creatives and industry players to support the promotion of the #PlayGhana initiative. The minister emphasizes the interdependence of performers and DJs, stating, “Performers, you need the DJs; respect them. You can’t get to where you want to be if you don’t respect them.”

Mr. Okraku Mantey addresses the challenges faced by DJs and urges reconciliation for the greater good of the Ghanaian music scene. He calls on all stakeholders in the music industry to join forces in championing the #PlayGhana initiative. Additionally, he encourages churches, Gospel radio and TV programs, and presenters to actively feature Ghanaian content, stressing the importance of a collective effort to accord local music the recognition and promotion it deserves.
