Ghanaian music duo Lali and Lola have formally petitioned the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, expressing concerns over unpaid streaming revenue from digital music platform Boomplay dating back to April 2023.
In their petition, the duo allege that despite consistent streaming activity on the platform, they have not received any revenue or transparent accounting from Boomplay for over a year. They argue that this not only undermines their hard work as artistes but also raises broader concerns about the protection of digital rights and earnings for Ghanaian musicians.
Our goal is not only to seek justice for ourselves but to call for accountability and better regulatory oversight in the digital music space.
The petition calls on the Ministry to investigate Boomplay’s royalty distribution model and ensure that local artistes are fairly compensated for their content.
Boomplay, one of Africa’s leading music streaming platforms, has yet to issue a public response to the allegations.
As digital streaming becomes the dominant mode of music consumption, artistes across the continent continue to demand greater transparency, equitable revenue sharing, and government support to ensure sustainable careers in the creative industry.
This development adds to the growing discourse around artistes’ rights in the digital era and highlights the need for strong institutional frameworks to support the evolving music economy in Ghana.
