Ghanaian reggae musician Rocky Dawuni says music should go beyond just entertainment and include messages that inspire and make people think.
In an interview with Ghana Weekend on Friday, July 18, he explained that while catchy rhythms and danceable beats are enjoyable, it’s the meaningful content that gives music lasting value.
“It’s important to choose to have something in there that can inspire people. Something in there that will make people think,” Dawuni said.
He acknowledged that upbeat songs that “shake the booty” are fun, but added that true artistry comes from creating songs with deeper meaning.
“The message in the music will be what makes the music transcendent,” Dawuni noted, adding that it’s the lyrics—not just the rhythm—that make a song memorable long after it’s heard.
He encouraged fellow musicians to take on the responsibility of producing music with substance, saying many of them are capable of making a positive impact through their art.
