Renowned Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi has appealed to stakeholders in the creative arts to revive radio theatre as a way of making storytelling and filmmaking more inclusive for the visually impaired.
Speaking at the National Film Authority’s National Film Dialogue held in Accra on Tuesday September 16, he expressed concern that discussions on the growth of the film industry often overlook persons with disabilities, particularly those who cannot see.
“Anytime the creatives meet, there’s only one thing that I always think about. The visually impaired. We’re talking of films. How would they enjoy the theatre or filmmaking?” he asked.
The celebrated actor explained that radio theatre, which was once a vibrant part of Ghana’s entertainment culture, could be reintroduced to give visually impaired audiences access to stories and performances.
“I think we have thrown away radio theatre, which, I believe, will also help the visually impaired to understand what we do,” he stressed.
Calling on industry leaders, he urged creatives and broadcasters to collaborate with radio stations to bring back the tradition.
“Let us ask the radio stations to start doing radio theatre,” he said.
His remarks add a new dimension to the national conversation on revitalising Ghana’s film industry, highlighting the need for inclusivity in policy and practice.
