The Gbese District Court has discharged Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, and two other persons who were standing trial over an alleged $8 million romance scam that reportedly targeted elderly Americans.
The development was made public by Ghanaian lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who had earlier pledged to defend Abu Trica in the case.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, January 26, 2026, Barker-Vormawor announced that the accused persons had been discharged by the court.
According to him, officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) attempted to rearrest Abu Trica and the two others within the courtroom immediately after the discharge. However, the presiding judge reportedly intervened and stopped the move.
Abu Trica and the two co-accused had been facing charges following an indictment by United States authorities, who accused them of orchestrating an elaborate romance scam that allegedly defrauded elderly Americans of millions of dollars.
More updates are expected as the case develops.
