Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has dismissed claims that he has been campaigning for President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term in office.
Speaking in an interview with George Quaye on JoyPrime TV on Wednesday February 11, A Plus addressed the perception that his public admiration for President Mahama amounts to support for a third-term agenda.
“I’ve never, and I’m putting this on record, I’ve never advocated that John Mahama, His Excellency the President, should do a third term. I have never, anywhere,” he stated firmly.
He emphasised that President Mahama himself has openly declared that he is not interested in pursuing a third term.
“John Mahama has stated that he’s not seeking a third term,” A Plus noted, adding that the President is not championing any such move.
Clarifying his position, A Plus explained that the real issue being discussed is the removal of presidential term limits — not a special arrangement for Mahama.
“What we are advocating for is an end to term limits. It has nothing to do with John Mahama,” he said.
According to him, if term limits were removed before the end of Mahama’s tenure and the law permits him to contest again, that decision would be entirely up to the President. However, he stressed that the conversation is broader than any one individual.
“Is John Mahama the only person who will benefit if term limits are removed?” he asked, pointing out that potential beneficiaries could include the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, or any future presidential candidate who emerges victorious in party primaries.
A Plus further argued that Ghana’s current democratic structure, particularly with fixed term limits, has not necessarily translated into national development.
“There is no country in this world that has developed with the kind of democracy that we practice. Not one,” he claimed.
His comments are expected to generate renewed debate over constitutional reforms and the future of presidential term limits in Ghana.
